Holiday Park Auvergne - About 2,000 years ago, Gergovia, the most important town of the Gallic Arverni tribe, was located just outside present day Clermont-Ferrand. The region is actually named after this tribe – and today, in its capital, you can find a statue of one of the tribe’s most important chieftains, Vercingetorix.
Holiday Park Auvergne - In the year 52 B.C., he led the Gallic tribes’ revolt against the Roman occupation led by Julius Caesar. The Romans crushed the revolt, and this victory paved the way for the eventual conquest of Gaul, which then became a Roman province.
Holiday Park Auvergne - Vercingetorix was later taken to Italy where he was executed in Rome. He passed into history as one of France’s great sons and national heroes – and therefore, today, you can see his imposing mounted statue in Clermont-Ferrand.
